What is P.O.V.? P.O.V. (a cinema term for 'point of view') is public television's annual award-winning showcase for independent non-fiction films. Passionate, powerful and poignant, P.O.V. films - regardless of their subjects - are ultimately personal and unvarnished reportage on our lives. P.O.V. is presented by a consortium of public television stations: KCET/Los Angeles, WGBH/Boston, and WNET/New York. Cara Mertes is executive director of P.O.V. The series is produced by American Documentary, Inc. P.O.V. presentations have won every major film and broadcasting award including Academy Awards, duPont-Columbia Awards, numerous Emmys, Peabodys and the PrixItalia. Having finished 16 seasons on PBS, P.O.V. is a multi-media service organization focused on creating high impact, energetic broadcasts for the best independent point-of-view documentaries. The award-winning series is presented each summer on PBS, with year-round specials.
P.O.V. and Netflix, the world's largest online movie rental service, announced today a partnership to offer rental of the majority of this season's titles on DVD just one day after their initial airing on P.O.V. Now, titles will be available at Netflix initially and then released into wider distribution. Each P.O.V. title on DVD will also include additional materials developed for its PBS broadcast, including a facilitator's guide, fact sheet, and Web site, to foster further dialogue about the issues explored in the film.
The first title to make its DVD debut at Netflix will be "Farmingville," which won a Special Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. "Farmingville" will open P.O.V.'s 17th season Tuesday, June 22 on PBS and will be available at Netflix on June 23.
To help Netflix's more than two million members rent P.O.V. titles, Netflix has created the "P.O.V. Collection" within its extensive documentary genre. The Netflix documentary genre already includes a broad variety of films from P.O.V. including titles such as American Aloha: Hula Beyond Hawai'i, the highest-rated program of P.O.V.'s last season, and the Academy Award-winning Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision.
