Kirstie Alley (Cheers), David Carradine (Kung Fu), Lesley-Anne Down (Dallas), and Genie Francis (General Hospital) co-star in the epic mini-series from 1985: John Jakes' North And South.
Patrick Swayze stars as Orry Main, and James Read stars as George Hazard. One's from the South, and one's from the North. They meet on the way to the West Point military academy, and become best friends. They have many adventures together, but must struggle with their different upbringings in light of events that will soon lead to the American Civil War.
2 years and $25 Million in the making, the first North and South mini-series was directed by Richard T. Heffron, who the previous year had directed another big mini-series: V: The Final Battle. The Civil War epic aired during November of 1985, and was a huge hit with the public, generating two spin-off mini-series that were also based on John Jakes novels (1986's North & South: Book II, and 1994's Heaven & Hell: North & South, Book III).
And now, finally, you can expect the original mini-series to appear on DVD before the end of this year. Warner Home Video has North and South: Book I in-the-works right now for DVD release. There are no other details available yet, but stay tuned. We'll blow Reveille on our bugles just as soon as we have more to tell you.
