We know that there has been a lot of confusion for
The Nanny-fans since we
posted our story that the studio had removed the first season release from the schedule, and that everybody's looking for sources of hope that the release will still happen in North America. We've gotten several e-mails yesterday and overnight from fans who found an advertising brochure inserted into yesterday's releases of
Soap - The Complete 3rd Season and
Married...with Children - The Complete 3rd Season. Everyone who wrote in thinks it means our prior news was wrong, but we want to set the record straight and let you all know that it doesn't mean this at all. Here's what these fans saw (note the orange circle in the top right):
Sorry, everyone, but that exact same brochure panel was designed and printed prior to the original
May 2004 decision to remove The Nanny from the schedule, and the panel above was first seen on a brochure that was included in copies of
Who's The Boss - The Complete 1st Season, released on 6/8/04 (notice that
Boss itself is shown in the top left as a released item).
A modification to that brochure happened in the summer, and showed up in September's release of
227 - The Complete 1st Season. The changed brochure was now showing
One Day At A Time,
The Partidge Family, and
Party of Five - Season 2 as "coming soon" on it. That redesign happened before delays of
Partidge Family and
Party of Five - S2 happened in July. But that modified brochure is somehow still showing up in new box sets like yesterday's releases of
Soap and
Married...with Children.
TVShowsOnDVD owner Gord Lacey said it best when responding to one of the
Nanny-fans who wrote in about this ad insert: "Unfortunately that was created when they had plans to release the set, but it's not on the schedule right now." The sometimes hard-to-understand aspect about the DVD industry is that plans of release dates are constantly changing for all sorts of reasons. Don't forget that sometimes it's for the best of reasons, though, such as
Newsradio's year-plus delay in order to add lots of extras. Perhaps that is the situation with
The Nanny as well, since
we've recently seen that the actor who played young "Brighton," Benjamin Salisbury, was asked to participate in newly-recorded extras. We're not sure that's the real reason, though. We have been told directly by Sony that
The Nanny is currently off the Region 1 ("North America") schedule, and that the extras they have asked Salisbury to record are currently planned to be used for a non-Region 1 release (although they could show up on an R1 release down-the-road).
In any case, don't be confused by the brochure being included in new releases like the third season sets of
Soap and
Married...with Children. Note that this is the second time we've had
Nanny-fans write to us and tell us our December story about the title being pulled was wrong, wrong, wrong. Our sources at the studio are very well-placed, though, and we trust them well to give us accurate and current information. Continue to stay tuned, however, and if we find out anything further we'll be sure to update the fans with more news.
