The folks at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (formerly Columbia/Tristar) are known for keeping info about upcoming DVD releases very very close to the chest. Yet sometimes info slips out, as it has today...TVShowsOnDVD has already posted this morning a half-dozen "rumor mill" style stories about upcoming TV-DVDs from the studio. Still,
The Nanny is the perfect example of why the studio doesn't like to talk about these things in advance: because plans change.
Sony-Columbia never formally announced
The Nanny on DVD, but last April we were thrilled to
pass on info that the first season of the show was planned to arrive on disc in August 2004. However, just a month later we were sadly
passing on the word that the DVDs were "pulled from the schedule due to marketing reasons." Still, the feeling at the time was that this was a temporary situation.
The Nanny is one of Sony's hottest TV properties, and they are very well aware of that fact. It's got a large following here at TVShowsOnDVD, and so we feel it is our responsibility to pass the info below on to our readers, despite our reluctance to report "negative news," especially since the holiday season isn't over just yet with New Year plans looming.
But the info we've been given is that
The Nanny has run into some sort of roadblock that Sony feels is big enough to cause them to pull the title from their schedule completely. Yes, completely...it's no longer planned to come out on DVD at all! We don't know what the nature of this problem is supposed to be, but our informant seems to think that consumer feedback may still change Sony's minds about their plans (or lack of plans).
However, looking this morning for a current e-mail address, phone number, or street address to recommend for consumers to use to provide feedback came up empty. I searched all over Sony's website looking for what I felt would be the best contact point to recommend, and although I may have overlooked something, I feel that it's safe for me to say that Sony's not easily providing a way to get consumer input, on this or any other DVD-related matter. If that changes, we'll update this news item with the proper contact info.
We're sorry to be the bearer of this bad news. While we know that some people out there aren't fans of
Nanny Fran's voice and laugh, but I must say that I myself am a long-time viewer of the show, and would love to get DVDs myself. It's tough when the studio can't make it happen, but we hope that Sony finds a way to make this work. Stay tuned, and we'll let you know if the situation changes.
