August 2006 saw Rhino's release of
Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Collection: Volume 10 on DVD. The 4-disc set included the following list of episodes:
- 212- GODZILLA VS. MEGALON
- 503- SWAMP DIAMONDS (Plus Short: WHAT TO DO ON A DATE)
- 514- TEEN-AGE STRANGLER (Plus Short: IS THIS LOVE?)
- 810- THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION
The other day our friends at
the Satellite News website reported that this version of that release is now off-the-market, so I think we can all assume it's a collectible from here on out. Apparently there was, in their words, a "
rights mix-up regarding the inclusion, in the original set, of episode 212- GODZILLA VS. MEGALON."
Apparently Rhino is going to try to make this up by re-releasing the set on
February 5th, with that episode (and disc) replaced. The new release, called
Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Collection: Volume 10.2, will instead have episode 402- THE GIANT GILA MONSTER. There will also be an extra featurette with the star of
The Giant Gila Monster, Don Sullivan. Finally, Satellite Info reports that the new (replacement) disc in the package will also have a "
short sketch featuring Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu and J. Elvis Weinstein commenting on the SNAFU that led to the withdrawl and re-release." Cool.
The episode with
The Giant Gila Monster has never been released on DVD previously, and Rhino has no plans to release it separately from the "10.2" set, so if you have the previous release you'll have to get the new one to get "Gila." There will be no change to the other three discs. We know the package art has to change to at least accommodate the change in contents, since episode titles are listed on the front and back. No word yet if the new "10.2" package art will be similar to the old front cover, shown below, or if it will change to something completely new. Stay tuned and we'll let you know. Our thanks to reader Charles Werner for the heads-up about the story at Satellite News; please visit their website to read the original story in-context.
