The third Mummy film starring Brendan Fraser, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, is hitting theaters on August 1st, and along with it we're also getting new DVD special editions of the first two films, The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, arriving in stores today. Also, in two weeks, those first two films (from 1999 and 2001) will also be available on high-def Blu-ray for the first time. But what about the 2001 cartoon program adapted from those films, The Mummy: The Animated Series?

This animated spin-off of the first two films was originally broadcast as part of the Kids' WB block of programming for two seasons, with the second season being retitled "The Mummy: Secrets of the Medjai". The star character was young Alex O'Connell (voiced by Chris Marquette, who you may know from Joan of Arcadia). Parents Rick O'Connell (John Schneider, Dukes of Hazzard, Smallville) and Evy O'Connell (Grey DeLisle, Star Wars: Clone Wars, What's New Scooby-Doo?, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Spectacular Spider-Man) show up as well, as does "Uncle" Jonathan Carnahan (Tom Kenny, SpongeBob SquarePants, Transformers: Animated, Futurama). The villian, of course, is still Imhotep (Jim Cummings, Wacky Races, The Transformers, Animaniacs) and his servant Colin (Michael Reisz, Transformers: Robots in Disguise).

Late in 2002, a single DVD release came out in the USA: a compilation "feature" called Quest for the Lost Scrolls. As it took partial scenes from the 1st, 12th and 13th episodes, and combined them together (with shorter scenes from other episodes) into a new "movie," it did not go over well with fans of the show who preferred the episodes as they were aired, and we had decided not to cover it here at TVShowsOnDVD.

At last fans get to own all 26 episodes of the show - as originally produced! - on DVD. There's going to be a catch, though...it's only being released in Canada. However, that's okay, even if you live in the United States, because these discs are easily imported by ordering through Amazon.ca (your account with Amazon.com will work fine, and the exchange rate is handled automatically via your credit card) and they will work in any standard DVD player purchased in North America ("Region 1"). Each has a list price of CA$14.99 SRP, but each is currently discounted to CA$10.49 at Amazon.ca, as of this writing. They are available starting from July 22nd. They are presented in full frame video, English - Dolby 2.0 audio, and with English subtitles. Running time is approximately 3 hours on each release. Below we have the front and rear cover art for each volume.

UPDATE: Apparently these three DVDs are NOT exclusive to Canada after all. They will be available in the USA, but exclusively sold at Wal-Mart stores. Reader Jerolyn Broussard wrote in first, directing us toward information about this, and how they will be sold at Wal-Mart stores beginning on the same date of July 22nd. However, a few minutes later another reader, Paul Jutras, wrote in to say that he had picked up all three of these at his local Wal-Mart store TODAY. Our thanks to both of you for the quick e-mails, with this important info!
