Halloween is synonymous with three things: linens with holes cut into them, candy corn that tastes like neither candy nor corn and, of course... Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.
In 1981 the B-movie queen (played to perfection by Cassandra Peterson) began her campaign to bring only the very best—and worst—of schlock cinema to audiences. The result was Elvira’s Movie Macabre, a television series that featured a different film, infused with Elvira’s own twist of humor and innuendo, each week. The series lasted five years and made Elvira the first nationally syndicated horror show hostess to ever hit the airwaves. Not to mention the sexiest Halloween icon since Frankenstein’s bride!
Last year, in late September, the folks at Shout! Factory released six episodes of Elvira's Movie Macbre series on DVD: there were six single-episode releases, and also (at the same time) three double-feature releases (paired up the same six episodes). This year, they are doing it again, only this time without the single-disc versions. Since the double-features proved to be so much more popular, Shout! has decided to stick with that format.
These 3 releases all ship on September 25th, at a list price of $14.99 each. As you can see above, this year's slate consists of these titles:
- Gamera, Super Monster/They Came From Beyond Space ($10.99 at Amazon)
- Gamera, Super Monster: With the intention of conquering Earth, the evil alien Zanon unleashes the biggest threat Gamera’s ever faced—every threat Gamera’s ever faced! Tasked with defeating each of his former adversaries again, Gamera and the Spacewomen are the world’s only hope against total enslavement.
- They Came From Beyond Space: After a team of scientists is dispatched to investigate the remnants of a meteor shower, they return controlled by a mysterious alien force. Meanwhile, nearby town residents are being infected with the deadly “Crimson Plague.” It’s up to Dr. Curt Temple (Robert Hutton) to uncover the source of the invasion and rid the Earth of its unwelcome visitors.
- Blue Sunshine/Monstroid ($10.99 at Amazon)
- Blue Sunshine: Ten years after experimenting with a batch of LSD known as “Blue Sunshine,” Frannie (Richard Crystal) begins to experience unusual side effects, including excruciating headaches, hair loss and a homicidal rampage that results in his own death. Now, his good friend Jerry (Zalman King) must find the dealer responsible for “Blue Sunshine,” before he’s wrongfully convicted of the murders.
- Monstroid: When a small Colombian village is viciously attacked by a creature from a nearby lake, a corrupt chemical company sends a specialist (Jim Mitchum) to destroy the beast and cover up their involvement with its creation. Inspired by a true story!
- Maneater Of Hydra/The House That Screamed ($10.99 at Amazon)
- Maneater Of Hydra: While vacationing in the Mediterranean, a group of tourists pays to spend a weekend exploring a lush island occupied by the botanist Baron von Weser (Cameron Mitchell). Their money will fund the continuation of his experiments, but their blood will feed the demented Baron’s carnivorous plants.
- The House That Screamed: Headmistress Madame Fourneau (Lilli Palmer) runs her French boarding school for troubled girls with an iron fist. Still, one by one, her students are going missing without a single trace of evidence left behind. Are the girls escaping Fourneau’s absolute authority and their torturous 19th-century social conditioning? Or are they being taken against their will?
