Back in 2003, Rhino Home Video released DVD for both seasons of the classic musical-sitcom TV series, The Monkees
, in cool record-player-style packaging. These sets have been discontinued and out-of-print for quite some time now, and previously-owned copies can go for quite a pretty penny on the used DVD market. Now, though, word has come to us through our retailer contacts that fans won't have to pay through the nose any more to get the adventures of Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork: both The Monkees - Season 1
and The Monkees - Season 2
are both returning to DVD on September 27th
, at a cost of $69.98 SRP for each season set. No word so far if these will be combined into a "complete series" set, or what we'll see in terms of extras. Our retailer contacts inform us, though, that these will possibly be getting released through Shout! Factory, so usually we can count on some sort of bonus material for a show of this magnitude. No promises, though, since the studio (whether it's Shout! or anybody else) hasn't formally announced the title to the press. Stay tuned, however, and we'll keep you updated with additional info, and package art, once everything gets finalized. For now, Amazon.com does have pre-release listings
for both titles, but they aren't taking advance orders just yet. Check back, though!
One of our readers, Mike de Courcy, asked Shout! on their Twitter feed whether they were indeed the studio behind these releases. Their reply
to him, shown in a screen capture below, was "I wish! Sadly, it's not us.
" No worries; we'll fill you in on which studio it turns out to be, once these titles get formally announced. Our thanks to Mike for that!
UPDATED FURTHER: It looks like these releases will be coming from Eagle Rock (a.k.a. Eagle Vision). The Season 1 set will come on 6 discs, while the Season 2 set will be on 5 discs. It looks like the second set will also include the 1969 special "33⅓ Revolutions Per Monkee," but we're not positive about that just yet. Stay tuned!
