Last year I received an email from a lawyer who represented Universal Studios in trademark infringement cases. I was given 24 hours to remove the show from the site or face a potential lawsuit. Not wanting any trouble, I removed the show from the site.
Now, over a year later I've made some contacts at Universal Studios. In the past few weeks I have looked into the claims of this individual and found them to be false. He does not represent Universal Studios in any matter. Over the past year he has passed himself off as a representative of the studio, causing harm in the Miami Vice fan community. Universal Studios has not decided what they will do with Miami Vice in regards to a DVD release. The show has not been slotted into a release date, but it has not been cast off.
Hopefully Miami Vice fans will understand that since this person didn't represent the studio they shouldn't harbor bad feelings for Universal Studios. The individual has been contacted by Universal Studios legal department and has been advised to cease and desist all actions in regards to his threats. Fans should feel free to discuss their desire to own Miami Vice on DVD. Please keep in mind that music clearances could still play a role in the release of this show on DVD.
Hopefully this will be the end of confusion on this matter. I have also asked Universal Studios to draft a public response to the actions of this individual. If it's sent to me it will be posted on the website and I'll send it to the webmaster at Miami-Vice.org
