Created and Exec Produced by Get Smart's Leonard Stern, McMillan and Wife was one of several shows (along with McCloud, Columbo and sometimes others) that were part of a rotating selection of 90- or 120-minute programs that shared a timeslot under the group name "The NBC Sunday Mystery Movie." As a result, each series only appeared every 3rd or 4th week, but each one gained a strong following nevertheless. McMillan and Wife starred Rock Hudson and Susan St. James in the title roles, and featured a memorable performance by Nancy Walker as their housekeeper, Mildred, plus appearances by Mildred's sister, Agatha, played by Martha Raye.
San Francisco Police Commissioner Stewart McMillan often gets assistance from wife Sally in solving some of the city's worst crimes, with cases ranging from a missing mummy to a kidnapping/dognapping combo, to murder. Suspects are a-plenty, as are the guest stars that included Jack Albertson, Rene Auberjonois, Jonathan Harris, Stacy Keach Sr., Wally Cox, Tyne Daley, Lorraine Gary, Jackie Coogan, Claude Akins, Bobby Troup, Selma Diamond, and Michael Ansara.
McMillan & Wife - Season 1 arrives on DVD with these guests and plots on August 9th, in a set containing 2 double-sided discs that runs 625 minutes for 8 episodes. Cost is $39.98 SRP, and specs are: Fullscreen video, English Mono audio, and English/Spanish subtitles. We're still waiting on box art, so stay tuned for that.
