The Lucy Show - Release Date, Exclusive Box Art and Bonus Item Preview for The Official 1st Season

'Beautifully' remastered 30-episode collection, plus extras, coming out in late July

Posted by David Lambert
A few weeks ago we updated you about the upcoming DVD release of The Lucy Show - The Official 1st Season, which we first heard about last autumn. This morning it's officially on the schedule, with CBS DVD's formal announcement of a release, distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment, on July 21st. The 30 episodes from the first season have been remastered ("beautifully" is the word from the studio!) from the original film negatives.

It also includes a new interview with Lucille Ball's daughter, Lucie Arnaz, plus rare cast commercials and a special "Message from CBS DVD," responding to the extraordinary demand from fans for this show's release. We've got an exclusive preview of that message for you, seen at the bottom (beneath the package art). In that picture you'll see some cartoon Lucille and Vivian characters on the sides; note that in the actual version these will be animated, so that they are cranking up the on-screen wording.

Running time from the featured episodes is 733 minutes, presented in full screen black-and-white video (the show began filming in color for the second season) and English mono audio. It is also closed captioned for the hearing impaired. During that first year, Gale Gordon ("Mr. Mooney") wasn't there yet; Gordon was still on Dennis the Menace and couldn't join The Lucy Show until the following season. But Dick Martin (Martin & Rowan's Laugh-In) was a recurring character on the first season, and other guests included Lucy's kids, Desi Arnaz Jr. and Lucie Arnaz, plus Charles Lane (Petticoat Junction), Nancy Kulp (The Beverly Hillbillies), Majel Barrett (Star Trek), character actor Sid Gould, Peter Marshall (Hollywood Squares) and Alan Reed (The Flintstones).

Here's the studio description for the release, followed by a first look at 3D package art, and an exclusive look at the "Message from CBS DVD" special feature (note that the Lucy Show cover art seen at the bottom of the "Message" is an early version; our exclusive high-resolution 3D picture of the box is the a more recent version of the packaging).

UPDATE (4/21):: In our new story we've posted even more information about the bonus material, and CBS DVD has sent over to us an animated, updated version of their special message (to replace the still-photo version shown below). Be sure to see it for all the updated details!

After the death of her husband, Lucy Carmichael (Lucille Ball) and her friend, the recently divorced Vivian Bagley (Vivian Vance), move into a house together with their children. The series follows the adventures of the widow Lucy as she grapples with the comic complications of life on her own.
