It's been almost exactly two years since we posted rumors
that The Love Boat
was coming to DVD. That gossip never amounted to anything at the time, but now we've got more solid word that the Pacific Princess
is due to set sail on home video at last!
A couple of days ago, on Friday, we received word from a few readers starting with Aryn Leroux (thanks!) that entertainment industry television shows like Extra
and The Insider
had mention of The Love Boat
coming to DVD sometime next year. We had no way to verify that info, having missed the broadcast ourselves and being unable to contact people at the show. But help arrived soon from others, beginning with longtime reader Greg Madsen. Greg e-mailed us this on Saturday:
The current issue of Entertainment Weekly (The Fall preview Issue) has an article about the anniversary of the Love Boat. In the article it states that the show will be released on dvd "next spring"
Today I found a copy of that issue of the magazine, and I've scanned the appropriate portion for you; you can see it below. It certainly shows that there are DVD plans for the classic ABC show for Spring 2008
. As you can see on the cover (adorned by a different great-looking "Doc," Kate Walsh of Grey's Anatomy
's new spin-off, Private Practice
), I've circled in red the part on the lower left that mentions the special look at the 30-year anniversary of The Love Boat
. That article begins on page 116, with a new pic of Gavin MacLeod's "Captain Stubing," Ted Lange's "Isaac," Bernie Kopell's "Doc" and Lauren Tewes' "Julie." The below scan comes from page 121, just above comments from Tori Spelling about how her dad, Aaron, always wanted to bring back the show as a feature film. Hmmm...maybe we're just happier with the good ol' days. We can't wait to update you with specifics on this release, so stay tuned and we'll let you know when Paramount Home Video tells us that this release sets sail at last!
