Paul Dini - best known for his writing on cartoon shows, especially
Batman: The Animated Series - is (among other things) currently performing scribe duties on the hot hot hot J.J. Abrams (
Felicity, Alias) series
Lost. Earlier this month, Paul spoke out about various goings-on in his career, while giving a speech at the Wizard World Convention held in Dallas, TX. While talking about
Lost, he talked about DVDs. DarkHorizons.com
reported about this back on November 9th, which we had been unaware of until reader Jordan McBride sent us the heads-up note the other day:
ABC is fully behind the show and it rarely sends in notes to the writing team. The decision to air the show in "Pan and Scan" was the network's decision and the DVDs feature widescreen transfers of the show.
One of the original marketing plans was to release the DVD of the two hour pilot some three weeks after it aired. ABC moved on to the concept of just re-airing the show, like NBC and CBS do now, on Saturdays for those viewers who need to catch up. DVD sets are planned with deleted scenes but Disney and Bad Robot have not decided on any release dates yet.
There's a lot more in there about
Lost, including some spoiler-ish looks ahead to the weeks and seasons ahead. But we're not here to talk about that, we're here to talk about DVDs. And TVShowsOnDVD owner Gord Lacey actually got ahold of a bit more info on them! He found out that a DVD team was sent to Hawaii to shoot footage back while they were working on the pilot, and material has probably been shot since then. DVD Producer David Naylor, of The DVD Group, is working on the set, and that's good news because he's put together great TV-on-DVD sets for J.J. Abrams' other two shows,
Felicity and
Alias, and also did work on some DVD sets for
Buffy, Angel and
The Simpsons...not to mention the amazing James Bond 007 DVDs he has produced! We have no doubt this will end up being as good, or better, than the awesome
Alias sets, especially since they've been thinking about the DVDs since day one!
As optimistic as that is, don't forget that Disney/Buena Vista hasn't announced this yet. It's most likely that we will see this as a Season 1 box set released in the weeks leading up the start of the second season, just as was done with
Alias. So we still have a long wait, we presume, but it sounds like when they arrive, they'll be a must-have. Stay tuned, and we'll be all over it when the time comes.
