First time on any format! Talented triple threat Lola Falana exploded onto network television in 1976 with four legendary specials. The Lola Falana Show showcased Lola's powerful vocals, her incredible dance skills and a light touch of comedy with guest appearances by some of the biggest names in show biz. Among the many stars who grace these hour-long shows are Bill Cosby, Muhammad Ali, Sonny and Cher, Billy Dee Williams, Redd Foxx and Dick Van Dyke.
Lola enthralls viewers while performing timeless classics like Lady Marmalade, Ain t No Mountain High Enough, I Got You Babe, I Wanna be Where You Are, Stop in the Name of Love, and countless others. These shows, not seen since their original telecasts, are a time capsule of classic prime-time variety programming that will remind you why Lola was once the highest-paid female performer in Las Vegas.
Video Service Corp. (VSC) has announced the
October 6th DVD release of
The Lola Falana Show, a series of 4 variety show "specials" that aired on ABC from January to March 1976. It came from folks like Allan Blye (producer on
The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and
The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show) as well as Bob Einstein (who you know as "Super Dave Osborne", but who wrote on
The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour). The announcer from the three above-named Allan Blye programs came with him to announce for Lola; that was none other than a "pre-Optimus Prime" Peter Cullen.
Besides Cullen, and besides the folks named in the studio description at top, you'll also see guest stars such as Art Carney, Dinah Shore, Hal Linden, Gabe Kaplan and Dennis Weaver. This 2-DVD set costing $29.98 not only contains all four installments of the show, but additionally features bonus commentary by author/director Nelson George, plus a photo gallery and biography. Here's a look at the fabulous package art!
