Rhino is releasing
My Little Pony - Two Great Pony Tales on
Jan. 24th. This $14.98 SRP single-disc release comes with 2 stories, each consisting of 4 segments, taken from the first season of the '80s cartoon show:
- "The Glass Princess"
Hearthrob, Gusty, and Lickety-Split are captured by the “Glass Princess,” Porcina, who wants to use the Ponies’ manes for her new magical cloak. Once she regains her magical powers she plans on turning all of Ponyland into glass! But Megan comes up with the idea to switch the magical pony-mane cloak with a cloak made from the Bushwoolies’ hair. Will they be able to switch the cloaks in time to save Ponyland from the wrath of Porcina?
- "The Magic Coins"
The Sea Ponies find a treasure chest filled with magic gold pieces. The Ponies quickly discover they can make any wish come true, and Baby Lickety-Split puts all of Ponyland in jeopardy by wishing it would never rain again. When they discover that the magic coins are the property of Niblie, a grumpy troll, the Ponies try to persuade him to reverse all their wishes. The future of Ponyland hangs in the balance!
Now, if you already own
My Little Pony and Friends - The Complete 1st Season, then there will be no reason to pick this disc up as it duplicates material already found there. Rhino probably cannot release any material from other seasons, we're guessing, because the '80s
My Little Pony cartoon is a Sunbow property, like
Transformers, G.I. Joe, Jem!, Visionaries, and
InHumanoids. As Rhino themselves
has informed us, their license for Sunbow properties has expired and Sony Music now owns those rights. However, Sony Music (a.k.a. Sony BMG) has not yet announced anything regarding their plans or intentions for these properties.
So why is Rhino releasing this at all? Well, this past holiday season Paramount - who owns the rights to release newly produced releases of the above-named properties - put out a direct-to-video DVD called
My Little Pony - A Very Minty Christmas. It sold well, and on Feb. 7th Paramount is releasing another one called
My Little Pony - The Princess Promenade. The timing of Rhino's new release on
January 24th is probably meant to remind fans of the old show that these episodes are still fun to watch, and if new fans can be made of the old show, then we'll bet Rhino still has some stock of the first season box sets they would love to interest young fans in. We would certainly recommend that fans look into getting that!
For now, though, you can pre-order
Two Great Pony Tales from
Amazon.com for a super-low price of just $6.99...wow, what a bargain! We would love to show you some cover art for
Two Great Pony Tales, but Rhino hasn't made that available just yet. But we'll bring it to you just as soon as we can, so stay tuned!
