Land of the Lost - While we cringe at the thought of a Will Ferrell remake, Rhino brings us a Complete Set of the '74 Original

As if Will Ferrell's butchering of Bewitched in an inane remake were not enough, Universal announced last April that they had cast him to star in a 2007 remake of The Land of the Lost. From everything we've heard since then, it looks like this is headed in the direction of a parody of the show it will be based on, which begs the question: who's gonna go watch it? People who hated the original show? Newsflash: those folks may tend to avoid a new feature with the same title. So, fans of the original show will go see it? No, not if you parody it and make fun of what they loved.

Rhino Home Video understands this completely, and is taking the opportunity right now to ensure that fans will have the original 1974 series on DVD to enjoy forever. All three seasons are already available on DVD separately (the final season came out last April, in fact), but on December 6th Rhino will release The Land of the Lost - The Complete Series in a nice 8-DVD set with all 43, original, uncut episodes from the first version of the show. Not only will you get to enjoy approximately 18 hours of adventure and fun, you get to enjoy all the extras that were available on the separate season sets:
  • Exclusive Interviews with the cast and crew
  • 17 Commentaries with cast & crew, including Sid & Marty Krofft
  • Land of the Lost Interactive Quizzes
  • And more!

If you already have the existing season sets, there is probably no reason to get this new Complete Series set. On the other hand, if you've been holding out, then this is what you should aim to get. The pricing of this new release is going to be very attractive: at a $99.95 SRP, the whole will now cost less than the sum of its parts (it is $109.85 SRP to get all three seasons individually at the moment). Below is Rhino's description of the show, plus a look at the artwork on the new outer cover. Also, fans of the 1991 version of the show will be pleased to know that Rhino is considering it for a DVD release as well!
Marshall, Will and Holly may have been on a routine expedition when they entered the Land Of The Lost, but there was nothing routine about Sid & Marty Krofft's vision for this groundbreaking Saturday-morning televsion series of the 1970s. Joining acclaimed science-fiction writers like David Gerrold, Larry Niven, D.C. Fontana, Norman Spinrad, and Theodore Sturgeon with cutting edge makeup and visual effects teams, the Kroffts raised the bar for sophisticated, intelligent, and entertaining programming. The result was a fantastic odyssey on the planet of Altrusia, filled with dinosaurs, Sleestak, Pakunis, and vistors form alternate dimensions. The Marshall family - Rick, Will, Holly, and, later, Uncle Jack - were strangers in a stranger land, but they survived by their wits, compassion and sense of humor.
