One of our industry contacts has let us know that Fox Home Entertainment is preparing a release of the long-awaited Irwin Allen series, Land of the Giants, on DVD! We don't have confirmation from Fox as of yet, so we certainly want to categorize this as a "rumor," with all info subject to change. So please take the following info with a grain of salt until the studio confirms it.
According to our friend, who spoke on condition of anonymity, this will be a "Volume" release rather than a season set, similar to Fox's releases of other Irwin Allen-produced series. That means we can expect approximately half of the first season's twenty-six episodes, each an hour long. Land of the Giants ran for two seasons on ABC, from Fall 1968 to Spring 1970.
The story centers around the passengers and crew of the sub-orbital craft Spindrift, which is on an intercontinental flight and somehow gets transported to another world...a world where there are humans there, but the Spindrift castaways are approximately 1/12th their size! Now they must survive in a place where everything is immensely bigger than themselves, avoid the government officials and scientists of a brutal dictatorship, and find a way to repair their crashed ship using technology that is decades behind that which they are used to.
Our source informs us that Fox is tentatively planning to release this in the Late January to Early February timeframe. It seems that extras will be on board, but no details yet as to what. List price will be in the $40-$50 range, judging by previous releases that are similar to this. Stay tuned for more info, when Fox makes it official!
