The L Word - Showtime's original series about a group of young women in Los Angeles: their lives, careers, and romantic relationships (both gay and straight) - was
first said to be coming to DVD in 2004 before a single episode had ever aired.
Now we've been told by a reader, Jim Drake, that Showtime "set a date" for the DVD release of the show's first season. Jim didn't provide us with a source for his info, nor is there official date info at the show's home page. However, strangely, there IS a price named there for the set. They say it will be $69.99 SRP.
So where is this date coming from? Well, a quick Google search shows that this date Jim provided to us,
Nov. 9th, is actually repeated in numerous places. Including a good number of reliable online retailers that cater to the gay community.
These e-tailers, like TLAVideo.com, show the 11/9 release date, verify the $69.99 list price, and all show that this will be 5-DVD set. Official cover art isn't available; there are different temp images at different sites. There's disagreement about the video and audio specs, and extras aren't mentioned at these sites at all.
However, one fansite,
TheLWordOnline.com, has several of interesting mentions over the past few months that concern the DVD and it's extras. They also seem to have latched on to the 11/9/04 date. We'll skip the bit about the Australian DVD release, but otherwise here is the quote:
Expected release: 9 November 2004 (US)
(Updated June 3, 2004) In a recent interview with Windy City Times, Ilene had some interesting news about the DVD release:
AM: The DVD is coming out in November for the holidays. As you work on the DVD, can you tell me some of the special features to entice us?
IL: There are going to be quite a few special features. The only one I can tell you about is the 13th episode, our girls went to prison. We shot a much pulpier version of it and that is going to be in the DVD collection. It's replete with all of the conventions of the genre, shower scenes, food fights and so on, and we are going to include that.

(Updated May 27, 2004) Ilene was asked, at the recent Museum of Radio & Television seminar in New York, if the DVD would have bloopers...she replied that there would be scenes we haven't seen before as well as bloopers.
Interesting! In the coming days and weeks, we'll make every effort to verify the information we've spoken about today. For now, we just figure that we're spreading gossip and rumors, and to take it with a grain of salt until the studio officially tells us something. Stay tuned, because we will try to find out about this and get back to you as soon as possible.
