Yesterday we
posted news about a feature that will be found on the upcoming DVD release of
Kyle XY - The Complete 3rd Season. As we reported, a Twitter account under the name of Julie Plec - who was a Co-Executive Producer on the show prior to its cancellation - posted
a tweet last Thursday saying that "
KyleXY season 3 dvd has a mini wrap-up. It's the best we could do given the circumstances." As we said at the time, we didn't know what form that "wrap-up" would take, nor could we confirm it at the time.
Today you can consider it "confirmed". Although the studio isn't going on the record until the DVD set is announced (and that could be any time now, within the next week or two), and although we haven't heard from Ms. Plec yet either, we did get a call today from an industry source that's reasonably close to the project. They had some details they were willing for us to share with fans, in order to set the right expectations about what this "wrap-up" will consist of.
First, let's tell you what this is NOT. For the DVD release of the 2nd and Final Season of
October Road, which was also released by ABC/Disney, cast members had filmed a special 15-minute "series finale" to wrap up storylines on the canceled series (that's a quote from
our report about that DVD extra). Overnight we've seen some speculation by fans on the message boards, thinking that this is the same thing that will be happening for
Kyle XY; it's not.
What we've been told is that the people running the show didn't have the storyline wrap-ups all tied up in a bow yet, because they weren't planning to get canceled before a fourth season (or a fifth, etc.). However, they had been laying out the storyline continuations for the fourth season of the show, and sketched out what direction the program and its characters would be taking. So the DVD "wrap-up" feature, which isn't finalized (so all of this could be subject to change), will consist of writers and producer interviews discussing what those directions were going to be, and what would have happened next if the show had continued.
It's a better way to say goodbye to Kyle, Jessi, the Tragers and everyone else than to just leave everybody hanging, right? Applause to them for making the effort. We'll bring you the finalized details about this, and the
Season 3 DVD release in general, just as soon as Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment makes their official announcement of the set. Stay tuned!
