Fans of
Kyle XY remember that the second season DVD set came out last December, with all 23 episodes on it. But they probably also recall that at first there was some confusion about when the title would arrive in stores (initial reports put it in the Spring 2008 timeframe, but it actually didn't hit until the last Tuesday of the entire year) and also what would be on it (some reports around the 'net had said it would be a 13-episode collection, until we directly confirmed the 23-episode "complete season" count with the studio). With that in mind, we're cautious about reporting anything in the "rumors" category about
Kyle XY - The Complete 3rd Season. On the other hand, we know how hungry fans are for info, so we're going to pass this along to all of you. However, please take it as early, unconfirmed information, at least for now.
This past Thursday evening, a Twitter account under the name of Julie Plec, who is a co-executive producer for
The Vampire Diaries, was tweeting with fans about that new show's debut. But along the way she also responded to a question about the ending of the recently-canceled
Kyle XY, a series she had held the same behind-the-scenes position on.
Plec's responding tweet answered that "
KyleXY season 3 dvd has a mini wrap-up. It's the best we could do given the circumstances." While that's all that was said in the Twitter post, the implications are obvious: that the final season of the ABC Family series will be coming to DVD soon, and that it will have some form of an "ending" that wasn't part of the finale which was broadcast.
Of course that's all somewhat vague, as we don't know from the provided info if such a "mini wrap-up" refers to footage that was actually shot (like
October Road got on it's final season DVD), or just a text display explaining things, or some sort of a description given verbally in an interview or commentary track (among other possibilities). And while we prefer to be trusting that this is the real Julie Plec tweeting here, we definitely have to be cautious: we all know by now how Twitter can be wild in terms of people assuming other identities, and misrepresenting. While the posts give a realistic impression that she is who she says, it's also noteworthy that the Twitter account under Plec's name has no profile picture, no biography, no link to an official website, and isn't a verified account.
So with caution on our mind (and no offense intended to Ms. Plec), we tried to confirm this info that was tweeted. We checked in first with our contacts at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, but the company has no official information for us yet, prior to the title's actual announcement. They wouldn't say exactly when that announcement will take place, either. However, one of our industry contacts believes that such an announcement could potentially happen before the end of this month. Take that with a grain of salt, though...no promises that an announcement will happen just yet. It's all up to Disney, after all. Someone else offered to get in touch with Plec via e-mail to verify things that way, but we haven't heard back from that person.
So we'll file Plec's comments under "rumors" for now, and we'll keep a sharp eye out for that
