In 2005, Universal Studios released
Season 1 on DVD, and after a very long wait Telly Savalas fans finally got a DVD release of
Kojak - Season 2 this past week thanks to the folks at Shout! Factory. So what's next for the lollipop-licking, smooth-scalped New York City detective? Overnight we got a hint of that thanks to
a new Amazon entry titled "
Kojak - The Complete Movie Collection." Priced at $34.93 SRP for approx. 800 minutes, it's scheduled for release on
January 24th. No package art or details are provided there, and the studio hasn't formally announced the title to press just yet.
As we're sure readers will be quick to point out, the 3rd, 4th and 5th seasons are all available on DVD overseas, so why now follow up in the USA with
Kojak - Season 3? Frankly, we don't know why not. If we find out, we'll try to let you know. We certainly hope North American fans will have the remaining season sets available to them on DVD! In the meantime, this
Movie Collection will still provide something for fans to enjoy.
So what's expected to be on this release? Well, all we can do is guess, but let's guess logically. The original Savalas-starring show ran from 1973 to 1978, over the course of 5 seasons. In February 1985 was a reunion telefilm titled "
The Belarus File," and in February 1987 there was another one called "
The Price of Justice." Then from November 1989 to March 1990 there were 5 more reunion stories, which saw the end of Telly's time in the role and which aired close enough together that many fans refer to those five installments as a "sixth season" (although it's unclear whether the studio considers it that way). More than likely, in our opinion, an 800-ish minute DVD set titled "
Kojak - The Complete Movie Collection" will probably have those 7 post-series productions from 1985 to 1990. We ARE just guessing for now, however...stay tuned for an official studio announcement with the actual details!
