This past May saw BFS Entertainment's DVD release of Stephen Fry's
Kingdom...a release which turned out to be the
Series 2 episodes of the U.K. legal dramedy. What ever happened with
Series 1 on DVD? We've finally found out, thanks to
an update entry late this past Friday at the BBC America Shop's blog.
The main blog post there concerns DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases being planned by the BBC for the latest "Richard Sharpe" telefilms starring Sean Bean (
Lord of the Rings films,
Goldeneye, National Treasure). These productions (
Sharpe's Challenge [2006] and
Sharpe's Peril [2008]) are just that, telefilms...albeit the 15th and 16th such telefilms in the sixteen-year history of Bean holding that role. Still, since the "Sharpe" productions aren't actually a regular television program (as was the case with Ioan Gruffudd's
Hornblower telefilms), we don't really cover them here at TVShowsOnDVD.
However, below the "Sharpe" post is an update about
Kingdom, clearing up for certain what fans already knew: that this past spring's DVD release was indeed the 2nd Series, and addressing why it came out before the 1st Series did...and whether fans can expect the 1st Series on DVD. The below quote is a portion of the BBC's post:
Rights for Season One and Season Two ended up with two different companies. So who wasn't on the ball about releasing the season they had? Ooops! That would be us. We're in the process of trying to iron this out and hope to share some good news with you Stephen Fry fans about the release of Season One next year.
Sounds good. Stay tuned and we'll bring you up-to-speed on the details (date, price, contents, package art, etc.) of the
Kingdom - Series 1 DVD release, once everything has been finalized!
