From 2000 to 2004, York Entertainment had 11 single-disc titles released for
The Hunger, with each now-discontinued DVD containing roughly 4 episodes of the late '90s series. The first season of this horror anthology series was broadcast on Showtime in 1997-98, and hosted by Terence Stamp (
Superman II's "General Zod",
Smallville's "Jor-El"). The second season aired in 1999-2000, and was hosted by David Bowie (who was one of the stars of the '83 box office film of the same name).
The reason York's releases have gone out of print is because their license to the program has expired. Apparently the license has now landed at E1 Entertainment (
formerly Koch Vision). We've learned that E1 is planning the first multi-disc release of the series, with a
June 2nd launch of
The Hunger - The Complete 1st Season.
For the 22 episodes seen during the first season, guest stars include Lena Headey (
Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles, 300), Daniel Craig (
Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace), Karen Black (
Easy Rider), Robert Ito (
Quincy), Sally Kirkland (
Anna), Colin Ferguson (
Eureka), Esai Morales (
Caprica), Margot Kidder (
Superman), Chad Lowe (
24), Bruce Davison (
X-Men films), Joanna Cassidy (
Blade Runner) and Sofia Shinas (
The Crow), among others. The first episode, "The Swords", was directed by Tony Scott, who directed the early '80s film
The Hunger.
E1 Entertainment hasn't formally announced the title yet, so we don't have details, pricing or package art at this time. And the provided release date could still possibly move. But stay tuned and we'll update you with the finalized info just as soon as we can, so stay tuned!
