Holocaust (mini-series) - Award-Winning NBC Mini-Series (with Meryl Streep & James Woods) Reportedly On The Way!

May Release Planned for Holocaust

The 1978 mini-series Holocaust won 8 Emmy Awards, including Meryl Streep for "Outstanding Lead Actress," Michael Moriarty for "Outstanding Lead Actor," writer Gerald Green (who also adapted his screenplay into a book) for "Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series" and overall for "Outstanding Limited Series." The production also won two Golden Globes (Moriarty for "Best TV Actor" and Rosemary Harris for "Best TV Actress"), plus a Peabody Award. Other members of the huge cast include James Woods, Ian Holm, David Warner, T.P. McKenna, Sam Wanamaker, Fritz Weaver, Deborah Norton and Tovah Feldshuh. One of the directors of Roots, Marvin J. Chomsky, helmed this classic mini-series.

The story of two Third Reich-era German families - one Jewish, one Nazi - aired on NBC in 4 parts during April 1978. It was both praised and criticized for various aspects of the realism involved, but most agree that it raised awareness among the younger generations about the German attempt to exterminate Jews in concentration camps, per "Hitler's Final Solution." It covered such major events as the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, and the Jewish imprisonment at and liberation of Auschwitz.

This classic mini-series has long been on lists of "MIA" productions wanted on DVD, and now at long last it looks like this is on its way! Our friends in the retail industry have leaked word to us that Paramount Home Entertainment is preparing a May 27th release of Holocaust on DVD, in time to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of its original broadcast! No further details are available this early, and don't forget that the entire thing isn't officially announced yet (so it's all subject to change). But we wanted to give you the heads-up right away, and let you know that this is planned. Stay tuned for more information, just as soon as we can get it!
