In early February we
passed along word that the folks at the Warner Archive Collection is working on an MOD (manufactured on demand) DVD release of the mid-80s cartoon series
Challenge of the GoBots. What else is up their sleeve for the future? To find out, we had to sort-of take a peek into the future ourselves. Which we did, courtesy of (and with much gratitude to!) one of our readers, Joseph Kimbler. As many of you know, the first Saturday in May each year is "Free Comic Book Day" (FCBD), which this year will be May 7th. Joseph managed to get ahold of an early copy of the
Green Lantern comic that's produced for FCBD 2011, and he took a picture of the ad found on the inside back cover (you can see that picture below).
As you can see, it's promoting 5 of the DVD releases planned or already released by the Warner Archive's MOD program for animated TV shows that are "Saturday Morning Stars." These 5 featured shows were produced by either Hanna-Barbera or Ruby-Spears (whose properties are now considered by Warner to be part of the HB library, after a series of mergers and buy-outs between 1981 and 1996). As you can see, the aforementioned
Challenge of the GoBots is front-and-center in the ad's line-up of box art.
Flanking the
GoBots on each side are
Mr. T (which we understand will mostly likely be a 2-disc set of the 13-episode
Complete 1st Season), and
The Herculoids - The Complete Series. All three of these are marked as "Coming Soon," and the ad doesn't provide any sort of date or even timeframe. However, it's a cinch that we won't see these until AT LEAST the "late May/Early June" time period, and possibly later than that, since this comic book the ad is in won't be in circulation until the first full weekend of May!
The other 2 featured titles are marked as "available now!," and those would be
Thundarr the Barbarian - The Complete Series and
Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron - The Complete Series. We should mention, however, that while
Thundarr can be found at Warner's online store quite easily, for some unknown reason
Swat Kats cannot! We reported about a month ago that the title's listing had disappeared from WBshop.com, with no official reason given as to why...just guesses. However, copies of the
Swat Kats MOD set can be found
through Amazon.com!
In the end we're sure all five titles will be found through the WBshop/Warner Archive's listings
at the Hanna-Barbara Classics Collection, so we'll keep an eye on that for your behalf! Stay tuned, of course, for individual announcements and updates for each of these titles, as the situation warrants. In the meantime, here's Joseph's picture of the ad from the upcoming
Green Lantern FCBD 2011 comic, including early package art (could be subject to change) for all three unreleased items. Our thanks again to Joseph for sharing!
