Earlier this week we
posted that Davis-Panzer, which is taking pre-orders right now for the first season of
Highlander: The Series on Blu-ray Disc, also had plans to bring other shows of theirs to the high-definition video format as well. We regret to inform you, however, that we were misinformed. The person I spoke to at first had been incorrect about plans for
Hercules, Xena and other Davis-Panzer program to be released on Blu-ray disc. We've received word from farther up the chain that fans should not expect these. Here's what a spokesperson from the corporate offices told us:
We don't have any plans for Xena or Hercules on Blu-ray; right now we are just doing pre-orders from Season One of Highlander on Blu-ray. And, depending on interest on that, we will move forward with the rest of the seasons. So far there has been a lot of great response, but pre-orders will really make it seem serious.
So there you go: fans of the
Highlander television series should lock in their copies of
the first season on Blu-ray, to encourage releases of further seasons. And who knows; perhaps good sales of this series will be motivation for
Hercules or
Xena on down the line. It's not fated for the near future, though, and we regret passing along the bad info and getting up your hopes. If something changes, we'll certainly let you know!
We had also seen some fans of the
Highlander franchise comment that Davis-Panzer should concentrate on getting a Blu-ray release of the original Christopher Lambert/Sean Connery film out instead. Just as a reminder, though, that Davis-Panzer only controls the home video releases for the TV show, not the films. The movie rights are owned by Lionsgate Entertainment, and while they are planning yet another
standard DVD release of the first film for early January, they haven't announced a Blu-ray release of it just yet. Be sure to direct your interest in that toward Lionsgate, not Davis-Panzer.
Our thanks to the folks at Davis-Panzer corporate for clearing up this matter for us, and all of their other help. They'll be letting us know about any future updates, so stay tuned and we'll pass them along!
