This past Tuesday, January 8th, saw CBS/Paramount's release of
Gunsmoke - The 2nd Season, Volume 1 on a 3-DVD set. Almost immediately upon its release, however, we began getting reports from readers that the first disc contained an episode from the 4th season, mistakenly inserted in place of a Season 2 episode with a similar name! One of the best descriptions of this problem came from reader Rod Phillips, so we'll quote him here:
...the show on Disc One called "How To Cure A Friend" is actually a show from Season Four called "How To Kill A Friend":
- "How To Cure A Friend" aired 11/10/1956 and starred the actor Andrew Duggan.
- "How To Kill A Friend" aired 11/22/1958 and, ironically, involved a character named "Harry Duggan."
Someone was a little careless and switched the similarly titled shows from Season Two and Season Four. What caught my eye was "MCMLVIII" on the end title. 1958 shouldn't have been in a Season Two set!
Thanks, Rod, for that detailed description. We've contacted the studio about this issue, and they are looking into it. We've held off for a few days on posting this story, hoping to have more to tell you on the studio's behalf, but they are still working on this.
