Beverly Hills, 90210. Melrose Place. Central Park West. Sex and the City. By the year 2000, Darren Star had created some steaming hot nighttime soaps in his television career. So for 2000's series which aired on The WB,
Grosse Pointe, Star decided to turn the concept on its ear a little bit and make the people on the cast of such a nighttime soap become the story.
Grosse Pointe is a show about a show called, well,
Grosse Pointe. In the fictional world,
GP is a prime time soap opera with five primary members of the cast. Those five characters are the stars of the actual show: the actual actress Irene Molloy plays actress "Hunter Fallow," whose character on the show-within-the-show is named "Becky Johnson." Al Santos plays "Johnny Bishop/Brad Johnson," Lindsay Sloane plays "Marcy Sternfeld/Kim Peterson," Bonnie Somerville is "Courtney Scott/Laura Johnson" and Kohl Sudduth is "Quentin King/Stone Anders." William Ragsdale of
Herman's Head shows up as does Joely Fisher of
Ellen and
Desperate Housewives. The onscreen melodrama of the fictionous soap is nothing compared to what happens when the cameras stop rolling...the young actors try to adjust to the demands of instant stardom, as their hit show launches them into the world of premieres, paparazzi and power.
