Gidget - DVD for the Telefilm Tying Together the 60s Sitcom and 80s 'New Gidget'

1972's 'Gidget Gets Married' will be available as an MOD title from Sony this October

Posted by David Lambert
Everyone's favorite surfers, Gidget (Monie Ellis, TV's "The Partridge Family") and Jeff (Michael Burns, TV's "Wagon Train"), have grown up and decided to get married. The couple moves to Florida, where Jeff's job at World Wide Dynamics causes him to work late hours. The company's strict rules and regulations also cause a strain in their marriage. But Gidget won't stand still and let things be, and her free-spirited ways shake up the company and the town. Featuring Don Ameche (Cocoon) and Paul Lynde (TV's "Bewitched"), GIDGET GETS MARRIED is a fun and romantic comedy. Newly remastered.
In 1965-66, the ABC network brought the novels and theatrical films to television with a single season (32 episodes) of Gidget, starring 18-year-old Sally Field in the title role which launched her incredible career. In 1969, the network wanted to try bringing the show back, but Field was in The Flying Nun at the time. So they instead cast Karen Valentine as the lovable young surfer in 1969's TV movie Gidget Grows Up. While the telefilm was somewhat successful as a follow-up to the show, it didn't do well enough as a pilot to re-launch the program, so Valentine moved on to her successful (Emmy-winning!) role on Room 222. In fact, our favorite "girl midget" wouldn't see regular television success again until 1985's telefilm titled Gidget's Summer Reunion led directly to 1986's two-season, 44-episode syndicated run of The New Gidget (both pilot and show starring Caryn Richman).

The two weekly sitcoms, separated by twenty years, were tied together by ABC's 1972 telefilm, Gidget Gets Married. Here our heroine (played this time by Monie Ellis) marries the surfer dude of her dreams, "Moondoggie"/Jeff (acted by Michael Burns). Macdonald Carey (Days of Our Lives) stepped in as Gidget's father, Russ Lawrence, and other cast on this outing includes Don Ameche, Joan Bennett, Paul Lynde, and Elinor Donahue. Today we've learned that Sony has scheduled an October 1st release date for an MOD (manufacturing on demand) DVD release of Gidget Gets Married! This is a single-disc title running 74 minutes, priced at $20.95 SRP. This item won't be available in stores, but will be sold online at e-tailers such as Amazon (via their CreateSpace MOD program) and the WBshop (via the Warner Archive). Cover art isn't available yet, nor are pre-orders being taken right now, but stay tuned for updates!
