As you know, DVD releases that go into retail stores almost always happen on Tuesdays (explaining why that is can be a discussion for another time!), with rare exceptions...usually a Friday for the odd "special" (hugely-hyped) release. Oh, items sold exclusively online might "go active" on any day of the week, even on the weekends...but in-store releases almost never start selling on the weekends. And no TV-DVD at retail that I can think of has ever had a street date on a Sunday...until now!
Yesterday afternoon Universal Studios Home Entertainment released this brief announcement:
The street date for the following titles has been moved from 12/26 to 12/23 - THE KINGDOM, AMERICAN PIE PRESENTS: BETA HOUSE, AMERICAN PIE PRESENTS: THE THREESOME PACK, INTIMATE AFFAIRS, EASTERN PROMISES, DECEMBER 2007 HD DVD RELEASES, GALACTICA 1980: THE COMPLETE SERIES. An updated trade announcement has been sent to all retailers.
You might recall that the release date next week for
Galactica 1980 - The Complete Series (and Universal's other DVDs for this coming week) was
going to be on Wednesday, Dec. 26th, because stores will be closed on Tuesday for Christmas Day. In effect, Universal has given stores the go-ahead to begin selling these on
Sunday, December 23rd, in order to capture sales from last-minute gift shoppers.
That makes all the sense in the world, of course...why didn't they think of that earlier? Well, maybe next time!
