After an encounter with a hero from another world, mild-mannered Ray Terrill gains superpowers and fights injustice as The Ray.
Welcome to Earth X, a parallel world...where the Nazis won World War II, and the New Reichsman rule over present-day America. CW Seed's newest hero arrives this fall on Freedom Fighters: The Ray.
After appearing as a live-action version of the character in the third and forth parts of the current season's "Arrowverse" four-way crossover event, "Crisis On Earth-X," Russell Tovey (Quantico, Being Human, Looking, Doctor Who
) returned to the role as an animated version of "Ray Terrill / The Ray": a flying superhero with light-based powers. The series, Freedom Fighters: The Ray
, appeared this past December on the CW Seed streaming service.
On Earth X, The Ray is part of the Freedom Fighters team, along with "John Trujillo / Black Condor" (Jason Mitchell; The Chi
), "Jenny Knight / Phantom Lady" (Dilshad Vadsaria; Greek
), android "Red Tornado" (Iddo Goldberg; Salem
), and others. They're up against the Nazi-affiliated New Reichsman, which consist of Supergirl's evil doppelganger, "Overgirl" (Melissa Benoist; Supergirl
), evil speedster "Blitzkrieg" (Scott Whyte; City Guys
), and evil archer "Black Arrow" (Matthew Mercer; Critical Role
...he also voices Freedom Fighter hero "Dollman").
Carlos Valdes and Danielle Panabaker ("Cisco / Vibe" and "Caitlin / Killer Frost" from The Flash
) have cameos, vaguely tying this in with the "Arrowverse" and previous CW Seed streaming show, Vixen
. However, it did NOT preserve complete continuity with The Ray as seen on the "Crisis on Earth-X" live-action crossover event, and it takes place before those events (so don't expect to see a romantic interest here for Ray; in this production he's single). Bruce Thomas (Kyle XY
) and Colleen O'Shaughnessey (Danny Phantom
) voice the parts of Ray's parents. There were 6 installments in the first season, each around just 6 to 8 minutes per episode.
While it hasn't been formally announced yet by Warner Home Video, a new listing
we found at Amazon.com shows that Freedom Fighters: The Ray
is in-the-works for release as a combo Blu-ray/DVD set, with Digital Copy included. They show a list price of $24.98 SRP, and you can pre-order it right away. There's no release date given yet, however. The entry merely says, "This title has not yet been released. You may pre-order it now and we will deliver it to you when it arrives.
" There's no package art, either; just a temp image taken from the show's promo campaign.
Stay tuned, of course, and we'll update you about this, as further info becomes available! In the meantime, we're standing by for the CW Seed's next animated production of a DC Comics character: Constantine
, debuting on March 24th. It stars the voice of Matt Ryan, who played the character in the 2014 NBC show. Here, however, he'll be much more true to his original personality in the Hellblazer
comics. If you're unaware, Matt Ryan has already reprised the character in the animated direct-to-home-video film Justice League Dark
, and in live-action a few years ago in an Arrow
episode, and now again in the current season for Legends of Tomorrow
(and he's not done there yet, either!). If you're fans of "John Constantine," then stay tuned. We'll bring you word about a physical disc release of the upcoming CW Seed series, as soon as that becomes attainable, too!
