Back in mid-June we
filled you in on Shout! Factory's plans to release the
Freaks and Geeks - Yearbook Edition on
October 28th. This turns out to be a RE-release, actually; back in 2004 we reported on
the original limited release of this 8-disc set. Now the folks at Shout! have made package art and other details available for the new release, and it seems to be identical to the original version.
The real tell-tale is their statement that this will be the"
first retail release of this coveted out-of-print collector’s item." It's also mentioned that there will be a total of 8 DVDs, including the six discs from
The Complete Series DVD release, plus "
2 bonus discs containing 6 hours of additional bonus material"; that matches up exactly with the 2004 yearbook set. The yearbook itself seems to be the same green color as the original, with an embossed foil-stamp, and - per the "belly band" wrapper around it (see picture below) it will be an "80-page yearbook packed with exclusive essays, trivia and memorabilia".
The feedback we've received about this release is pretty much on one side or the other of a fence: fans are either pleased they will be able to purchase this (having missed out on the original offer), or else they are upset that the people behind the show and the studio behind this release broke the promise made at the time that this yearbook edition was a limited release, would never be sold again, would never be available in stores, and that they would "break the mold" after the original limited run of the package. Both sides make valid points, obviously. We wonder what Judd Apatow and Paul Feig have to say about it? If they've commented, we haven't heard. Here's the package art:
