Anything can happen when Sister Bertrille (Sally Field) is in motion. Although her aims are always benevolent, her means are often bemoaned by a patient Mother Superior. Being the only nun with a "jet" cornette (the secret to her ability to become airborne), Sister Bertrille flies in and out of trouble with her canine companion, Horatio.
So goes Sony's description of The Flying Nun - The Complete 1st Season
. Of course, the cornette (the headgear a nun wears) wasn't "jet-equipped" (although that's a nice rhyme there!); the secret of Sister Bertrille's airborne action was her slight waist (she was 90 pounds) combined with the size and shape of the cornette let her get off the ground if the wind was just right. It's been said that it was often a challenge to the writers to come up with reasons why a nun would need to fly around to solve the problems of her, her sisters in the convent, and the people they all care for. But they always came up with warm, humorous plotlines that made the show enjoyable. The program also received praise from actual Catholic nuns, who thought the message and the portrayal of nuns was very close to the mark. Did you know that Sally Field almost didn't take the role? She initially turned it down, and producers were getting ready to sign Ronnie Troup (daughter of Emergency's
Bobby Troup) instead when Field changed her mind and took the role after all!
One other bit of trivia for you: Sally Field was also the star of the TV version of Gidget
, which is also being announced for DVD today (see our separate news story). In The Flying Nun
, Sister Bertrille had in her younger days been a surfer girl named Elsie Enthrington. In one episode, Bertrille looks at home movies of herself on the surfboard. You guessed it; the footage is in fact from Gidget
Now you get to enjoy all of this hilarity at home! Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just announced plans to release the first season of The Flying Nun
on March 21
. Sally Field starred for 3 seasons, and 83 episodes, as the nun with the ability to fly. The 30 episodes (617 mins) from season 1 will be on this 4-DVD set, which will sell for $39.95 SRP. This will be presented as originally seen: video will be in 1.33:1, while the audio will be mono tracks in English, Spanish and Portuguese, with Spanish and Portuguese subtitles.
The set will feature "A Look Back at The Flying Nun" (includes an interview with Sally Field), and bonus previews of other Sony titles. We have an early look at the box art for this release, but please remember that this is still subject to change:
