For about a month now, rumors have been flying around the 'net from consumers posting on message boards that Shout! Factory is working on a Father Knows Best DVD release. We've kept an eye on that situation, but haven't had anything worth reporting to our readers about it until right about...now. Within the past couple of days we've heard new rumors, this time from inside the industry, that this item is indeed in the works. We wanted to confirm this with Shout! Factory, but they have no official comment at this time. We wondered why not; this was a pretty reliable source as "rumors" go.
So we dug a bit deeper on this elsewhere, and found out that FKB is a rather complex item to license for DVD release (the rights to the show are held by Robert Young's estate, while the film negatives themselves are in Sony's vaults, and there may be even more to it than that), and that indeed some studio - presumably Shout! Factory - is taking on the challenge of getting the job done and putting Father Knows Best out on DVD, hopefully in 2008. However, nothing has been finalized yet, and there are no guarantees so far that this will come off. If that's the case, then we can all understand - and agree with - any studio choosing to keep mum about something that is so "iffy" right now.
We're going to keep an eye on the situation, though, and Shout! has assured us that if they have anything to say on the matter, we'll be the first to know. Stay tuned!
