As we've said in
a separate news post, Buena Vista Home Entertainment has taken Marvel Superheroes - The 60s Superhero Collection off the schedule for now, but instead will release a multi-disc box set of
The Fantastic Four instead to tie in with the July 1st theater debut of the new
Fantastic Four motion picture starring
The Shield's Michael Chiklis (as Ben Grimm/The Thing),
Dark Angel's Jessica Alba (as Sue Storm/The Invisible Girl),
Horatio Hornblower's Ioan Gruffudd (as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic),
Opposite Sex's Chris Evans (as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch), and
Nip/Tuck's Julian McMahon (as Dr. Doom).
It seems natural that Buena Vista would want to tie in to the film with a
Fantastic Four cartoon rather than the
Marvel Superheroes series, which featured a pantheon of Marvel Comics legends, but *not* Reed Richards and his team among them. However, there are two
Fantastic Four cartoon series (three if you count 1978's "
New FF"), but this release is almost certainly going to be the one from 1994. We based that conclusion on two reasons: 1) the 1967 show was made by Hanna Barbera, and is likely to be owned these days by Warner Brothers (the '78 show also seems to be owned by a different studio), and more importantly: 2) an episode from the 1994 show has already shown up on a DVD called
Daredevil vs. Spider-Man.
The 1994 show lasted two seasons, with thirteen shows per season, for a total of 26 episodes. This
Fantastic Four DVD release, as we said above, is known to be a multi-disc set. So let's hope every episode ends up on this compilation. Stay tuned; we're told that the formal announcement will be in just a few weeks!
