Family Matters, the hit comedy series that launched one of television's most loveable nerds, Steve Urkel (Jaleel White), comes to DVD June 8, 2010 from Warner Home Video (WHV). Titled
Family Matters: The Complete First Season, this release will feature 22 episodes on three discs and will retail for $29.98.
One of the most memorable and heartwarming comedies to emerge from the 1990s,
Family Matters focuses on the lives of the Winslows, a multi-generational, middle-class suburban Chicago family. The show takes a closer look at the at-home adventures of Harriette Winslow (JoMarie Payton-France), the sarcastic elevator operator who was initially featured on the enormously successful
Perfect Strangers.
Also featured on the series are Harriette's husband Carl (Reginald VelJohnson), a Chicago police sergeant and their three kids; rebellious son Eddie (Darius McCrary); intelligent daughter Laura (Kellie Shanygne Williams) and youngest child Judy (Jaimee Foxworth/Valerie Jones). In addition, the Winslows open their home to Carl's streetwise mother, Estelle - known as Mother Winslow (Rosetta LeNoire) - as well as Harriette's sister Rachel (Telma Hopkins) and her son Richie (Joseph Julius Wright).
During the first season, the Winslows are introduced to the show's breakout star, geeky next door neighbor, Steve Urkel (White). Urkel, the ultimate nerd, develops a big crush on the Winslow's daughter Laura. He's known for his oversized spectacles, high-water pants, suspenders and high-pitched, screechy voice. In spite of his shortcomings, Urkel possesses bold self confidence and proves to be irresistibly funny.
Family Matters originally aired from 1989, where it was part of ABC-TV's Friday night TGIF lineup, and ended in 1998 after the series moved to CBS-TV. The series ran for nine successful seasons and was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1996.
