Not too many of the regular readers at TVShowsOnDVD are fans of
Extreme Engineering, it seems (at least based on our voting system), but for those of you who *are* fans of this Discovery Channel series, you'll want to thank reader Tommy Raiko for spotting the fact that the first season is already on DVD, with the 2nd and 3rd Seasons both coming in the very near future. There are also individual volumes available as well. Discover the wonders of the modern world with this one-of-a-kind program that uses computer graphics and animation, as each installment gives you a nuts-and-bolts view of astounding - and sometimes futuristic - construction marvels.
As of this writing, there are currently 29 DVD titles for this show
listed at Discovery Channel's Online Store (and these are probably available at the brick-and-mortar Discovery Channel Stores as well).
Extreme Engineering - The Complete Season 1 contains 10 DVDs for $119.95, and is in stock now. The season covers such topics as the concept of building a bridge between Alaska and Russia across the Bering Strait, digging under Boston to create an underground "highway," a 2/3rds-mile-high skyscraper in Tokyo called "Sky City," a tunnel under the Atlantic Ocean between Canada and Scotland, and the need (and possible methods we could use) to widen the Panama Canal for today's modern mega-sized cargo ships.
Extreme Engineering - The Complete Season 2 will ship on
Dec. 19th and come on 9 DVDs for $109.95. It covers such unusual topics as the largest skyscraper in North Europe...one which must have a 90 degree twist built into the design!; efforts to save the city of Venice, Italy, from becoming completely flooded by installing a series of 79 football-field-sized floodgates; a look at a $10 Million super-shovel excavator to be used at a Minnesota open pit iron mine; and the efforts to make offshore oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico resistant to hurricanes (like Katrina and Rita).
Extreme Engineering - The Complete Season 3 will only be a 6-DVD set, and costs $74.95 as a result. It will be available from
Jan. 3rd, and episodes discuss a 2000-ton update to Washington D.C.'s Woodrow Wilson Bridge, a single dam in Mexico which - when finished - will by itself supply 2% of the electricity to the entire nation, a cable car system that will span the South China Sea, the world's longest rail tunnel cutting its way through the Alps, and the most bizarre engineering feat of them all: building a bona fide ski resort in the desert of the United Arab Emirates!
Again, these are also available as single-episode releases of the show as well, with each 50-minute episode going for $21.95. Click on the link above for all the details.
