A couple of months ago, we
reported that a DVD release of the 6 post-series
Emergency! reunion telefilms was in the works, per Amazon's
early pre-order listing prior to the official studio announcement. We expressed confusion at the time, however, because we were expecting a title such as "
Emergency! - Movie Collection," but the Amazon listing, which is discounted but shows a list price of $39.98 SRP, called it "
Emergency! - Season 7." As true fans know, the series ended after 6 seasons, and the six feature-length telefilms which followed took much longer than the time frame of a "season" to air: they were broadcast between January 1978 and July 1979, with months often going by between each production's appearance.
In connection with those type of concerns, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has done a truly nice thing for fans. Although the title still hasn't been formally announced to either press or retailers, and isn't officially on the schedule, they've sent over to us an early look at the proposed front cover art for this collection's packaging. As you can see from looking at it below, they're currently going with a HIGHLY appropriate title for the set: "
Emergency! - The Final Rescues." As a big fan of this show, I know that I could certainly live with that, as long as all six post-series productions are included (and I have no reason to believe they wouldn't be).
The other goal the studio has in sending this artwork to us early is pretty straightforward: in the past after an
Emergency! DVD release was announced, and package art became public, passionate fans of the show would find something about the design which would have been inappropriate to keep. Universal has been very good about responding to that type of concern and making artwork adjustments; they've actually revised box art for three of the six different season sets released so far (
2,
3 and
6)! So this time they have asked us to post the artwork for
Emergency! - The Final Rescues in advance of their formal announcement for the title, and give fans a chance to spot any problems now...before they finalize it. If you see anything that Universal ought to know, be sure to
tell us, and we'll pass it along.
And stay tuned! We'll be back in the near future with the official studio announcement, including the date this will be available, and all the official details. If we were to guess at a release timeframe, we'd be looking at March or April, since that's roughly a year following the previous DVD release for the show. It's just a guess, though...stay tuned for the actual date, once it's known.
