A little birdie in the home video industry has sung to us over the holiday weekend, chirping in our ears that the classic NBC "whodunit" series, 1975's Ellery Queen, will finally come to DVD in 2010. The short-lived show starred the late Jim Hutton (father of actor Timothy Hutton, and seen in classic films such as The Green Berets and Where the Boys Are). The program, based on the character from the classic novels, has gained a cult following over the years, despite only consisting of a single season: a pilot telefilm titled "Too Many Suspects" and 22 regular hour-long episodes.
Other regulars in the series included David Wayne (House Calls) as Ellery's father, "Inspector Richard Queen", and Tom Reese (North Dallas Forty) as "Sgt. Thomas Velie". Recurring guests included John Hillerman (Magnum P.I.), Ken Swofford (Murder, She Worte) and Nina Roman. Guest stars included the likes of Kim Hunter, Ray Milland, Tim O'Connor, Gail Strickland, Joan Collins, David Doyle, Ray Walston, Anne Francis, Don Ameche, Susan Strasberg, Orson Bean, Dee Wallace, Lynda Day George, Tom Bosley, Pat Harrington Jr., Eve Arden, Bert Parks, Betty White, Robbert Loggia, Rene Auberjonois, Pernell Roberts, Jim Backus, Larry Hagman, George Burns, Hayden Rorke, June Lockhart, John Larroquette, Eva Gabor, Dean Stockwell, Tab Hunter, Roddy McDowall, Susan Stafford, William Schallert, Robert Alda, Arthur Godfrey, Ed McMahon, Bobby Sherman, Dick Van Patten, Tricia O'Neil, Cesar Romero, Dick Sargent, Bill Dana, Diana Muldaur, Noah Beery Jr., Troy Donahue, Vincent Price, James Sikking, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Edward Mulhare, Vera Miles, Victor Buono, Polly Bergen, Ken Berry, Norman Fell, Edward Albert, Kevin Tighe, Bibi Besch, Bob Crane, Juliet Mills, Gary Burghoff, Ronny Cox, and Walter Pidgeon.
Whew, what a list! No wonder everybody is so anxious to get this released on DVD. Not to mention that the mystery stories were very engrossing! No release date is available yet, nor any other information. We only were told, by a VERY reliable source, to expect this to arrive in the coming year. Stay tuned, and we'll keep you updated as further developments occur!
