ER - 'And In The End...': Dr. John Carter Returns for the 15th (Final) Season, Announced Today for DVD

The last 22 episodes come home in July, with SO many guest appearances it's hard to name them all

Posted by David Lambert
Combining the extraordinary talents of best-selling author Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park) and Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television with Peabody, Humanitas, and Emmy-winning producer John Wells (The West Wing, Third Watch) and Emmy winner Christopher Chulack (Third Watch), the multiple Emmy Award-winning ER explores the inner workings of an urban teaching hospital and the critical issues faced by the dedicated physicians and staff of its overburdened emergency room. These medical professionals remain determined to save lives in a place where nothing is taken for granted, and nothing is certain...nothing except that another desperate person will be rushed through the emergency room doors in the next moment in need of their help.
The final 22 episodes come home with a return to greatness that left a number of fans wanting the show to never end. But end it did, and on July 12th Warner Home Video will bring to DVD ER - The Complete 15th and Final Season. Priced at $49.98 SRP, you'll also get Outpatient Outtakes (Unaired Scenes) as an extra; other bonus material - if any - hasn't been reveled yet. Mekhi Phifer (upcoming Torchwood: Miracle Day) as "Dr. Gregory Pratt" and Maura Tierney (The Whole Truth) as "Dr. Abby Lockhart" make their official exits from the cast early in this season. Angela Bassett (upcoming Green Lantern live-action theatrical film) joins, however, as "Dr. Cate Banfield." And Noah Wyle returns for the final seven episodes as "Dr. John Carter"...but is he a doctor, or a patient this time?

The star-studded final season even brings back Abraham Benrubi (Memphis Beat, Parker Lewis Can't Lose) as desk cleark "Jerry Markovic," plus includes many visits from old friends (sometimes in newly-filmed flashbacks), and - as always - many guest stars visiting the regular cast of characters at County General. Falling into both categories you should look for (in order of appearance per the IMDB, and apologies if we miss anybody): Sam Jones III ("Chaz Pratt"; Smallville), Charlotte Rae (Facts of Life, Car 54 Where Are You?), Julia Jones (Twilight: Eclipse), Shiri Appleby (Roswell, Life Unexpected), Goran Visnjic ("Dr. Luka Kovac"), Glynn Turman (A Different World, The Wire), Shane West ("Dr. Ray Barnett"), Carl Weathers (Rocky films), Courtney B. Vance (Law & Order: Criminal Intent, FlashForward), Anthony Edwards ("Dr. Mark Greene"), Paul McCrane ("Dr. Robert 'Rocket' Romano"), Laura Innes ("Dr. Kerry Weaver"), Amanda Aday (Carnivàle and the daughter of singer Meat Loaf), Amy Aquino ("Dr. Janet Coburn"), Alex Kingston ("Dr. Elizabeth Corday," Doctor Who), television producer/writer Garry Marshall (Happy Days, The Odd Couple), William H. Macy ("Dr. David Morgenstern"), Louis Gossett Jr. (An Officer and a Gentleman), Amy Madigan (Carnivàle, Grey's Anatomy), Judy Greer (Arrested Development, Archer), Susan Sarandon (Thelma & Louise), Ernest Borgnine (From Here to Eternity), Christian Clemenson (C.S.I. Miami, Boston Legal), Eriq La Salle ("Dr. Peter Benton"), George Clooney ("Dr. Doug Ross"), Julianna Margulies ("Nurse Carol Hathaway," The Good Wife), M.C. Gainey (Lost), Tom Arnold (True Lies), Sherry Stringfield ("Dr. Susan Lewis"; NYPD Blue), Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls), Marilu Henner (Taxi), Thandie Newton ("Makemba 'Kem' Likasu"), Ellen Crawford ("Nurse Lydia Wright") and Hallee Hirsh returning as "Rachel Greene."

Note that show creator Michael Crichton passed away during the production this season, and so for one episode Eriq La Salle ("Benton") appears in an out-of-story tribute to the famed writer. We'd like to take a moment and acknowledge his contribution to the show, and the contributions of everyone else behind the camera, and in front of the camera as well. That's a VERY large cast over 15 years, including many supporting roles (nurses, paramedics, etc.) who added so much to each and every story. We were SO happy that so many of these could be seen in the show's final episode, "And In The End" (along with the best look ever at the County General Hospital building itself!). Now here is a look at the package art for ER - The Complete 15th and Final Season. As you can see, the cover design honors the big cast members, both current and past, who appear in this wrap-up season (but don't look for George Clooney on the box; reportedly one condition of his guest appearance this season was that it would be as subtle as possible, and his name and image wouldn't be used to promote the broadcast or its later home video release, and Warner has of course honored his wishes).
