Dream On - Dreaming of DVDs

Some of our readers have already seen the Miami Vice and Bionic Woman news stories that were posted late yesteday at our website. For those of you who haven't seen those, we need to explain the source of the following story.

Universal has sent out a very nicely crafted book, approximately 35-40 glossy pages long and in full color. The outer cover and first couple of pages is stark black, with silver lettering, that says "Great Television on DVD is Universal. Universal Studios Home Video is Proud To Present Some of the Most Dynamic and Influential Television Shows of the Past 40 Years. The ShowsThat Defined Generations, Influenced Popular Culture and Set the Standard for Television's Most Groundbreaking Programming are Coming to DVD."

The way that is worded, it leaves little doubt in our minds that every television show covered in the brochure - quite a few, mind you - is planned for a DVD release in the not-too-distant future. There's a lot in there to mention, but one of them is an often-asked-about show from HBO's earlier days of original TV series programming, and we're proud to be the first to tell you that it's coming:

Dream On premiered in 1990, and was Executive Produced/Produced by John Landis and the future Friends production team of Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman, and David Crane. Brian Benben, Chris Demetral, and Wendie Malick (Just Shoot Me) star in this show that featured snippets of imagination shown coming to life, long before Ally McBeal appropriated the concept. The first season consisted of 14 episodes out of the series' 6-season, 120-show run.

What else do we know about a DVD release? Well, nothing frankly. Universal's intention seems to be to give distributors a heads-up that the shows in this booklet are being worked on, and to mentally get ready for them to come. I'm sure our readers will want to do the same, though everyone should keep in mind that anything can get changed or cancelled at a moment's notice. Stay tuned, though, and we'll bring more info to you just as soon as we can.
