Back in mid-October we gave you
the heads-up that the 3rd season of the series, along with
The Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff Special (the first of two specials produced for the show) would come to DVD in the first part of 2006. The DVD producers for MPI have kindly sent over some information for us about these releases, especially focusing on the special and giving artwork for it. The special will simply be called "
The Doris Day Special" on this DVD release's outer box (the on-screen title will be unchanged), and we have cover art for that as well. Here's the info:
THE DORIS DAY SPECIAL, an Emmy-nominated program not seen since it originally aired on CBS-TV in 1971 under the title "The Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff Special," will be released by MPI Home Video on May 30, 2006, the same date as the release of THE DORIS DAY SHOW - SEASON 3, a four-disc set with 26 episodes and extensive bonus material to be announced).
THE DORIS DAY SPECIAL stars the film and recording superstar in her first television music special, singing a collection of her greatest hits ("It's Magic," "Sentimental Journey," "Secret Love"), showtunes ("Who Will Buy?" from "Oliver," "Hurry, It's Lovely Up Here" from "On A Clear Day You Can See Forever") and other pop classics such as "Both Sides Now," "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)" and the Beatles' "Ov-La-Di, Ob-La-Da."
Special guest Perry Como performs "Didn't We" and duets with Doris for a nostalgic medley of songs, including "Everybody Loves A Lover," "Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars" and "Let Me Call You Sweetheart." With her pet dogs, Doris offers "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby" and joins a dance troupe for "The Gypsy In My Soul."
In addition, Doris' motion-picture partner Rock Hudson makes a surprise appearance and over one hour of bonus materials are included on the two-hour DVD, including never-before-seen outtakes, deleted scenes, new stereo mixes of songs recorded for the special and an interview with the co-producer.
This sounds like a very nice release, which will make any fan of the show quite happy! So start putting money aside right now for both of those releases, the special AND the 3rd season set, and mark
May 30th on your calendar (we will). The SRP for the special will be $19.98, and within a week or two we expect to have more details about the third season set.
The folks at the Discovering Doris Day website have
