In 2008 and 2009, Virgil Films and Entertainment (formerly Arts Alliance America) released DVD sets for the first three seasons of The Donna Reed Show
. Fans expected the studio to continue with releases at least through the fifth season, as the first 5 production seasons of the program are owned by the estates of Donna Reed and her then-husband, Tony Owen (the remaining three seasons - 6, 7 and 8 - are said to be owned by Sony). Virgil disappointed people, however, when they revealed that their license was over, and they would not be releasing further season sets after all.
A week ago today, however, there was good news
to be found on a Facebook page called "Bring the Donna Reed Show's Season 4 to DVD!" This page, which includes participation from Mary Owen (the youngest child of Donna and Tony), passed along the world last Friday that a new studio has picked up the rights to the remaining seasons that are in the hands of the heirs:
GANG!!!! we have received the BEST news that could come during this holiday season--SEASONS 4 AND 5 will be put on DVD by MPI Home Video. There is no firm date yet for season 4, but it will possibly be near or after Mother's Day 2011. LET'S STAND UP AND CHEER!!!
Just to put that timeframe in context, "Mother's Day 2011" in the USA is May 8th (the second Sunday of the month). Since DVDs sold in stores, like this title will be, are never released on a Sunday, then please keep in mind that May 8th is NOT the street date. On previous occasions when MPI home video has targeted a "circa-Mother's-Day" release of a DVD title, the actual street date turned out to be near the end of the month.
Still, no matter what the specific date turns out to be, it's terrific to know that there are plans in the works! Stay tuned and we'll keep you filled in on the schedule, specifics, supplements (if any), pricing and package art...just as soon as MPI makes them available! Our thanks to reader Drew Roberts for making sure we saw this.
