Doctor Who - Official Twitter Feed for the Classic Series Tweets Extras for McGann's Movie

Quite a lengthy list of supplements for a DVD of the 1996 telefilm which aired on Fox

This past week we've passed along the report that the 1996 Doctor Who Movie, starring Paul McGann (Luther) as the 8th Doctor and Eric Roberts (Heroes) as the Master, is coming to DVD in North America sometime during the next year. That was additionally confirmed this past Friday, when the BBC America online's shop's blog posted about it, commenting that "the forthcoming DVD has 3 hours of extras to document the production from every angle." Nice, but what would those extras actually BE?

This past Sunday the folks at the classic Doctor Who Twitter feed, which is run by Who DVD production house 2|Entertain, tweeted one-at-a-time the full list of the "VAM" (value-added material, or extras) for this release. Here's a compilation of their posts about these bonuses (please note that these are copied-and-pasted as-is, except for one edited-in interjection in italics, and so all other typos in the quotes below are theirs). Check it out:
  • "The Seven Year Hitch" This documentary looks at the seven-year quest to return Doctor Who to the screen.
  • The original release commentary [in 2000 from Europe, by director Geoffrey Sax - ed.] and a new one with McCann and McCoy, moderated by Nick Briggs.
  • "The Doctor's Strange Love" - writers Joe Lidster, Simon Guerrier & comedian Josie Long learn to love the film.
  • Photo gallery, isolated music score and four tracks from the film presented in full. Plus Coming Soon trailer.
  • Paul McCann's auditions for the role of the Doctor using v different script feat Gallifrey.
  • Brand new trivia subtitle track! And yes, it's McGann. Sorry for typos!
  • FX tests from Amblin featuring early opening titles tests and legendary Spider Dalek sampler.
  • FOX EPK, 1996 behind-the-scenes promo, Segal's TARDIS tour and alternate takes.
  • 2 x BBC1 promos featuring proper Dalek voices screaming "Exterminate!." Voices changed for finished film.
  • "Who Peter 1989-2009" - Second and final part of the series, presented by Gethin Jones.
  • "The Wilderness Years" - How the show was kept alive between the end of the series and this movie.
  • "Stripped for Action - The Eighth Doctor." The final part of the series looking at the comic book stories.
  • "Tomorrow's Times - The Eighth Doctor" - Another in the series looking at Doctor Who's contemporary coverage.
  • Last bit for today! 2 x Easter Eggs. Get hunting when the disc comes in!
That's a phenomenal amount of info...and of extras! We were already looking forward to this long-awaited release, and that's just gravy that makes it even more appealing. Sounds great.

Also piquing our interest is the most recent post at that same Twitter account, earlier today. A number of hours ago they tweeted, "Interesting developments regarding first R1 release of 2011. Hope to update within the next few days." An interesting tease there for us North American ("R1," or region one) fans! Perhaps it has to do with the info we reported on separately today about The Sarah Jane Adventures - The Complete 3rd Season on DVD? Or perhaps something else? We're not sure right now, of course, but we'll keep an eye on it and let you know! Stay tuned.
