Matt Smith and Karen Gillan make their triumphant return as the Doctor and his companion in an all-new series of Doctor Who! The new series will split in two parts, with DVD/Blu-ray release dates in July and in early November, closely following their premiere runs on BBC America, and then a complete series gift set just in time for the holidays.
In Part 1, the Doctor, Amy and Rory find themselves in Sixties America, battling the invasion the world forgot, then journey on the high seas of 1696 aboard a pirate ship, to solve the mystery of the Siren. In a bubble universe at the very edge of reality, the Doctor meets an old friend with a new face, and in a monastery on a remote island in the near future, an industrial accident takes on a terrible human shape.
And waiting for them, at the end of all this, is the battle of Demon's Run, and the Doctor's darkest hour. Can even the truth about River Song save the Time Lord's soul? Only two things are certain. Silence will fall. And a good man is going to die...
A month ago we reported
on the BBC's official "split-season" release strategy for DVDs and Blu-ray Discs of the 6th Series for Doctor Who
, starring Matt Smith. As expected, Doctor Who - The 6th Series, Part 1
was slated to come out in the summertime, during the so-called "mid-season break." And then both Doctor Who - The 6th Series, Part 2
and Doctor Who - The Complete 6th Series
later in the year, just in time for the holidays. All three titles are expected in both the standard DVD and high-def Blu-ray Disc formats.
Now BBC Video, in conjunction with North American distributor Warner Home Video, has formally announced Doctor Who - The 6th Series, Part 1
on DVD and BD, scheduled to street on July 19th
(that's a bit earlier than we expected, but the same announcement confirms to plan on getting the second half of the season in November, which is what we previously expected). Look for the following 7 episodes (note that these are the finalized story titles for these installments, which may be different than mentioned in previous reports): "The Impossible Astronaut," "Day of the Moon," "The Curse of the Black Spot," "The Doctor’s Wife," "The Rebel Flesh," "The Almost People" and "A Good Man Goes to War."
The DVD-format release of Doctor Who - The 6th Series, Part 1
will cost $24.98 SRP, with anamorphic widescreen video and English Dolby Surround 5.1 audio, and English subtitles. The Blu-ray Disc version will cost $29.98 SRP, and includes high-def widescreen video and English DTS 5.1 sound (probably Master Audio format, but if so that tidbit was left off the provided info). English subtitles will be present on this version, too. Both run 315 minutes, and include a featurette called "Monster Files"; the studio describes it this way: "Get under the skin and inside the minds of the new Doctor's most challenging opponents - included in this release: The Silence and Gangers
Amazon is not taking pre-orders just yet, but they do have "sign up to be notified" listings for both versions; we're linking you to those just below. Underneath that is the official studio trailer for the home video releases (similar to the broadcast trailers that many of us have already seen), followed by the Blu-ray and DVD package art. Enjoy!
