Doctor Who - A New 2-DVD Set for the 2005 Show: 'The 2nd Series, Part 1'

The BBC is re-releasing David Tennant's first 7 episodes in a slim, under-$20 box

Posted by David Lambert
David Tennant (Broadchurch, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) kicks off his triumphant reign as the Tenth Doctor with these first seven thrilling episodes from the second series of the re-booted Doctor Who! Alongside his companion Rose (Billie Piper, Secret Diary of a Call Girl), he must help Queen Victoria battle the Empire of the Wolf and battle an invasion of Earth from the evil Cybermen! Thrills, heartbreak, and terrifying monsters keep Doctor Who are around every corner of this huge fan favorite!
BBC Home Entertainment seems to have a new distribution plan for the 2005 Doctor Who program, because today their North American distributor (Warner Home Video) alerted retailers that on April 8th they will make "Doctor Who - The 2nd Series, Part 1" available. This is clearly only a DVD set, with no Blu-ray option mentioned at all.

This is shown to be a 2-disc set priced at $19.96 SRP, including 7 episodes: "The Christmas Invasion" (the 2006 Christmas special), "New Earth," "Tooth & Claw," "School Reunion" (featuring Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith), "The Girl In The Fireplace," "Rise of the Cybermen," and "The Age of Steel." No bonus material has been indicated so far in the BBC/Warner information.

We're not certain yet why this option has been made available, because for month we (and other Doctor Who fans) have been seeing re-releases of the first four seasons of the 2005 program, each with 5 or 6 discs but repackaged in standard plastic cases (they were originally in more elaborate digipaks), being sold at various retail store chains for a street price of just $19.99 each. A two-disc option in a similar price range is likely to be confusing (especially if this title is the first of many). If we learn anything more, we'll certainly let you know! In the meantime, here's the package art for the upcoming release of Doctor Who - The 2nd Series, Part 1:
