As you probably know, tomorrow's new episode of
Doctor Who marks the end of the first part of the 7th series (season), bringing us to the mid-season break and meaning there's no more new
Who until the 2012 Christmas special. But while we think about that, fans who can't wait to own the first five episodes of the current season will be able to buy
Doctor Who - The 7th Series, Part 1 DVDs and Blu-rays on
November 13th. Among the extras on this disc, that we
previously reported along with early cover art (the now-finalized packaging for both the Blu-ray and DVD versions can be found at the bottom of this story), will be a BBC America special called "The Science of
Doctor Who." As we mentioned in an early write-up about this release, "Science" was actually one of FOUR such specials which aired in the lead-up to the seventh series debut. So where on disc are the other three?
Earlier this week BBC Home Entertainment
announced a spectacular new 41-DVD package titled simply as the "
Doctor Who - Limited Edition Gift Set": it collects the first 6 series (seasons) of the 2005 re-launched program into one place. This means it covers Chris Eccleston's one season as the 9th Doctor, David Tennant's three seasons (and all of his specials) as the 10th Doctor, plus Matt Smith's first two seasons as the 11th Doctor. It also includes an "11th-Doctor-style" Sonic Screwdriver, a comic book (or graphic novel if you prefer) called "Doctor Who at Comic Con," and three original art cards (one for each Doctor represented in the set). New on-disc content, to supplement the included bonus material identical to what's already available on the individual season sets, was said by the BBC to consist of "
3 new Doctor Specials coming to DVD for the first time ever." Not unsurprisingly, these 3 specials are indeed the other 3 specials which BBC America aired, along with "The Science of
Doctor Who," in the lead-up to the seventh series broadcast debut. Those 3 specials included in the
Limited Edition Gift Set in their own case (shown at right) are "The Women of
Doctor Who," "The Timey-Wimey Stuff of
Doctor Who" and "The Destinations of
Doctor Who."
