Somewhere between the 3rd Wave of Walt Disney Treasures DVD releases in May 2004, and the 4th Wave in December 2004, the included titles were originally supposed to include a set of 3 Disneyland episodes from 1963, collectively known to fans these days as Dr. Syn, Alias The Scarecrow (but more formally known as "The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh"). The three-part story, like many episodes of the Disneyland anthology program, was introduced by Walt Disney himself.
The star was Patrick McGoohan, already known for his role as in the original Danger Man series, and who would return to the role the following year (the second run was also known as Secret Agent) before becoming a household name as "Number 6" in The Prisoner. McGoohan later went on to appear in films such as Silver Streak, Escape from Alcatraz and Braveheart.
The original DVD release of Dr. Syn, Alias The Scarecrow was pulled for reasons never made clear, but a few days ago Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announced the 8th Wave of the Walt Disney Treasures lineup, due out on November 11, 2008. After a 4-year delay, Dr. Syn will be among the releases!
Like all items in this series, this will be a 2-disc set delivered in a Limited Edition collectible tin package, numbered and with an authenticity certificate. It will include an introduction by Leonard Maltin, and a collectible lithograph in the packaging. The release inlcudes the original 3-part Disneyland version of "The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh" from 1963, and also the theatrical version (the three episodes edited together) released in England about six years afterward under the name Dr. Syn, Alias The Scarecrow. Cost will be $32.99 SRP in the USA, and CA$36.99 SRP in Canada. Stay tuned for package art!
