A Different World - Season 2
There's a number of cast changes in store, as Lisa Bonet ("Denise Huxtable") departs, shift the focus of the show to a more ensemble nature. Marisa Tomei ("Maggie") also departs the show, moving on up to biggest and better things (five years later she would win an Oscar for
My Cousin Vinny). Cree Summer ("Freddie") and Charnele Brown (Whitley's new roommate, "Kimberly") join the cast in their place, and Darryl M. Bell also joins the student cast as Dwayne's friend "Ron Johnson". There are plenty of changes in the Hillman staff as well, with comedian Sinbad making the grade as Coach Walter Oakes, Mary Alice ("Lettie") taking over the Resident Director role for the departing Loretta Devine ("Stevie"), and Glynn Turman as Col. Bradford "Dr. War" Taylor. Also making his first appearances this season was Lou Myers as Mr. Gaines, who ran and cooked at The Pit (Myers would be made a permanent part of the cast in the following season).
Guests this year included Gladys Knight, Rosalind Cash, Phylicia Rashad, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Tempestt Bledsoe, Diahann Carroll, Thomas Mikal Ford, Khandi Alexander, and none other than Jesse Jackson himself. Wow!
