DVD Exclusive is the proud sponsor of The DVD Exclusive Awards, an industry-specific way of recognizing the leading products of the DVD business, and the people behind them. Just as with other awards (such as the Oscars or the Emmys), this recognition is voted on by the people from within the industry.
Last night - December 2nd - was the 4th annual ceremony for these accolades, which formerly went under the name of "The DVD Premiere Awards." Last night's awards show was held at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles, hosted by Jenny McCarthy (who reportedly "came out wearing a dress made of 25 DVDs"), and was produced/recorded by Dick Clark Productions to be broadcast on December 9th in primetime (8PM Eastern/Pacific) on the FX cable network.
For the first time, TV-on-DVD product was honored in these awards, and the top award for "Best Overall DVD, TV Program (including all extra features)" was presented to
The Dick Van Dyke Show - Season 1! Image Entertainment, who distributes the package, and producer Paul Brownstein were honored for this great compilation of a classic show, which was meticulously restored for this release. The extensive supplements played a large part in the winning of this award, including such extras as the original pilot, retrospectives with the surviving original cast, promo spots, commercials featuring the cast, Emmy award show footage, photo galleries, and commentary tracks by Carl Reiner and Dick Van Dyke.
Those commentary tracks also earned Reiner and Van Dyke a separate nomination for "Best Audio Commentary (new for DVD)," but that award instead went to Ridley Scott, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, John Hurt, and others for the
Alien commentary in the newly released
Alien Quadrilogy package.
Video Business trade magazine reports that "Dick Van Dyke was on hand to collect the award for Best TV Show on DVD--more than 40 years after the broadcast debut of
The Dick Van Dyke Show." In fact, Mr. Van Dyke will be 78 years old on December 13th, just a few days after the ceremony airs nationally. This is a well-deserved honor, and a terrific DVD set! Don't forget that
Season 2 is out as well, featuring more commentary tracks and more great supplements, and that the remaining three seasons are
already scheduled for release.
